Information for 2023 Conference Presenters

Papers should be 5,000-7,500 words, adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style, include properly formatted footnotes, and be submitted online as a Microsoft Word document. Papers that do not adhere to these requirements will not be reviewed.

Paper submissions are reviewed by the Conference Committee. The Committee makes the first-round recommendation for possible publication in our peer-reviewed, scholarly publication, the Journal of the Middle East and Africa. In addition, the Committee selects the Conference "Best Paper Prizes."

Each paper presentation will be placed on a panel of related topics. Three to four presenters and a discussant make up a panel. Individual presentations should be 15-18 minutes long and should not be a straight reading of the paper. Each session room will have AV including a digital projector and computer. PowerPoint and visual media is encouraged and it is recommended that presenters bring their own USB stick.

Discussants will read all papers in advance of the panel as well as lead a Q&A discussion after the presentations. Each panel lasts approximately one hour and thirty minutes.

Presenters are expected to be members in good standing at the time of their presentation. Inactive members will be unable to access the online submission portal. Renew or join here.

Conference Papers are due Friday, September 30. All papers must be submitted via the online portal.
